Meet Ginger

Ginger just moved to a new town with her family.

The town is called Triangle Town.

Ginger lives with her mom, dad, sister, and brother.

On her first day, at her new school, Ginger met Makani.

Makani has lived in Triangle Town her whole life.

Makani lives with her mom, dad, brother, and grandmother.

At recess Makani whispered to Ginger, from underneath the monkey bars, about a special place.

She sang softly, "Around the corner and down the street. There's a place that's really neat. Down to the corner and around the block, it opens up at 8 o'clock".

"What are you singing about, Makani?", asked Ginger. "What is it?"

"I will show you after school", said Makani.

After school, Makani and Ginger walked what Makani called, "The long way home".

"Around the corner and down the street, there is a place that's really neat. Down to the corner and around the block, it opens up at 8 o'clock", the two girls sang as they skipped.

As soon as they turned the corner, Ginger saw a bright red triangular shape peeking through the trees.

"We are almost there", Makani said, "Welcome to the Triangle Zoo!"

The first thing the girls saw were the monkeys.

"Ohh...monkeys...I love monkeys". exclaimed Ginger. "Look how many monkeys there are in that one tree."

The next thing the girls saw were the giraffes. "Wow, their necks are long. Huh Ginger? Look!", Makani said with joy.

Sqwaack!

The girls turned around to find some big beautiful parrots hanging around in the grass.

"Those are wild parrots ", said Makani. "Three of these parrots sleep by the flamingos and five parrots sleep by the polar bears ".

"How do you know so much about the zoo, Makani?", asked Ginger. "Matteo told me. He is the zookeeper and he answers all my questions. He is real nice." Answered Makani, "You should meet him. Come on, follow me."

Makani led Ginger right up to a big gold door with the number 113 painted on the outside. Makani pointed at the number 113, and said "If you add those three numbers up together, the 1+1+3, that is equal to my favorite number".

"Your favorite number is five", said Ginger.

Just then the big gold door opened and out rushed a really tall, slender man.

"Well hello Makani and friend", said Matteo.

"This is my new friend, Ginger", said Makani.

"Nice to meet you Ginger, responded Matteo. "I have to get some more chairs for the auditorium , would you ladies like to help me?"

"Sure thing, Matteo", answered Makani and Ginger in unison.

"So girls", asked Matteo, "If we need ten chairs and we have six, how many more do we need?"

"Umm"...thinks Makani.

"I think I know", says Ginger.

"What are these chairs for, Matteo?", Ginger asked.

"There is going to be a bird show, called Two of a Feather", Matteo answered, "Would you helpful ladies like to be in the show?"

The girls agreed excitedly.

During the bird show's finale , Matteo calls Makani and Ginger up on stage. Then in flies two of the biggest birds the girls had ever seen. The giant birds landed right beside Makani and Ginger on two tree stumps. Matteo said the big birds were eagles and their names are Knick and Knack.

Matteo then handed both girls a ribbon to hold up, and whistled to Knick and Knack, who took off into the air.

The eagles flew up so high, the girls could barely see them. Knick and Knack swirled around in the wind and headed back down towards Ginger and Makani's ribbons.

Swoop! Swoosh!

The ribbons disapeared from the girl's hands and the huge eagles flew back out of sight.

"Wow", said Ginger.

"Wow", said Makani.

They looked at each other, wide-eyed.

"I think it is time to go", said Ginger, "and look, a beautiful rainbow"

"Aloha Matteo", said Makani.

"Aloha Matteo", said Ginger.

"Aloha girls, thanks for your help", answered Matteo.

As the girls walked towards the parking lot where Ginger's mother was waiting, Ginger was smiling from ear to ear. Ginger felt like she was walking on a fluffy cloud.

"Thanks for taking me to the Triangle Zoo, Makani. I had so much fun", Ginger said.

"I had a lot of fun too Ginger. Next time we come to Triangle Zoo, we can visit some of the other animals in the Zoo. There are so many", answered Makani

"I can't wait!", says Ginger as her mother drives into the sunset towards home.
