Holy Guacamole!

Hello everyone! My name is Avi and this is my firsthand account of my adventure to avoid becoming what most of you may think of as the creamiest and most deliciously mashed party dip around, Guacamole . Now don’t get me wrong, I too enjoy dipping a large corn chip or pretzel into dip, but there are many other snacks that can be had that don’t involve me. Whatever happened to carrots and ranch dressing, or pretzels in onion dip, or even my Mexican counterpart, chips and salsa (sorry tomatoes). I will now take you all on my brief, but eventful quest to escape the masher and form a protest  I have always dreamed of.

My first quest was to escape the kitchen counter in a way where I would avoid being splattered out of my shell into a pile of green mush. Standing proudly at 3 inches tall, this five foot drop felt equivalent  to a jump from the Empire State Building. EEeeek! I stealthily  searched around for something that would break my fall, or help me glide to a safe landing. Ah Hah! The banana peel Little Johnny left on the counter will serve as the perfect parachute, once everyone goes to bed.

Empire State Building & New York Skyline!

My local Stop & Shop!

Now that I have accomplished  my first task, I must round up my fellow Guacamole ingredients to stage the protest we have always dreamed about. I would have to roll myself all the way to the corner grocery store in order to get my fellow protestors. After what seemed like days, I had finally reached my final location. The local Stop & Shop filled with rowdy  and hungry customers looking for a quick meal. Gulp! I better move stealthily to avoid being mistaken for the stores already claimed avocados.

Now it was time to organize my group. One by one they worked together to venture from the top of their shelves. First cilantro, then red onion, Serrano chilies, lime and my counterpart tomato. One after the other we marched in line throughout the store and beneath the shelves, hoping we would not be seen until our big moment. We skipped throughout the store searching for tooth picks and post-its to create our protest signs. “What happened to ranch? & Try sour cream!” we scribbled. We then took to the front of the store, to set up our post in hopes of getting our word out there. One by one we marched on concrete, signs blowing in the wind, chanting our rights to avoid being mashed together into “Guac.” Everything seemed as though it was going well, customers stopped and stared in disbelief as they walked into the store. This was our moment….!

Here we are together!

…Or so I thought. Just as quickly as our protest began, it came to a startling  halt . An employee by the name of Jen (or at least that’s what her nametag said), scooped up our group into a single bag. “What a clever idea…” I heard her say, “…all of your Guacamole needs in one bag!” At that moment we knew this was it. I started to feel soft (No, really, we ripen  quite quickly), as we were carried together throughout the store. We were purchased together by a hungry customer for their weekend party plans, and have been bagged together ever since, under the name “Holy Guacamole.”

Although our quest seemed over, being together made things much better. The hungry customer took great care in preparing us carefully and meaningfully in her creation of what seemed to be the best party dip ever. The recipe you ask? Okay….okay…turn the page! Well, I figured I might as well give you one considering together, we do make the best party dip ever!

Guacamole Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1/2 red onion, minced (about 1/2 cup)
  • 1-2 serrano chiles, stems and seeds removed, minced
  • 2 tablespoons cilantro leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh lime or lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
  • A dash of freshly grated black pepper
  • 1/2 ripe tomato, seeds and pulp removed, chopped

Garnish with red radishes or jicama. Serve with tortilla chips.

Method

1 Cut avocados in half. Remove seed. Scoop out avacado from the peel, put in a mixing bowl. (See How to Cut and Peel an Avocado.)

2 Using a fork, mash the avocado. Add the chopped onion, cilantro, lime or lemon, salt and pepper and mash some more. Chili peppers vary individually in their hotness. So, start with a half of one chili pepper and add to the guacamole to your desired degree of hotness. Be careful handling the peppers; wash your hands thoroughly after handling and do not touch your eyes or the area near your eyes with your hands for several hours.

Keep the tomatoes separate until ready to serve.

Remember that much of this is done to taste because of the variability in the fresh ingredients. Start with this recipe and adjust to your taste.

3 Cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole to prevent oxidation from the air reaching it. Refrigerate until ready.

4 Just before serving, add the chopped tomato to the guacamole and mix.

Serves 2-4.

THE END!
