WHAT IS A PLANT AND WHAT DOES IT NEED

1-2.1  Recall the basic needs of plants (including air, water, nutrients, space, and light) for energy and growth.

1-2.2 Illustrate the major structures of plants (including stems, root, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds).

Plants need water, air, and light to make their food and grow.  Plants need nutrients to grow and stay healthy.  Plants need space to grow.

Plants have many different parts.  The stem grows out of the ground.  Stems support leaves, flowers, and fruit.

The root grows in the ground.  Roots hold plants in place.

A leaf is the  part of the plant that grows from the stem.  Leaves are usually green.

Flowers have petals.  They come in many different sizes, shapes, and colors.

Fruits are the part of flowering plant that contains the seeds.  Seeds are the part of the flowering plant that will grow into a new plant.
