Simple Machines

6 Simple machines

Screw

A screw is an incline plane the wraps in a spiral around a point

  • What are some other examples of a screw?
  • Is a wood screw an a example of a simple machine screw? If so doe is incoporate any other simple machines?

The image shown is an example of a lever built by a student in the past. A string would be tied to the top of the lever and when a marble bumps into the bottom it would release a wedge in the following project.

The picture below is an example of a wedge. A wedge is used to block a marble from moving down the incline plane.

The screw is used as a helexic incline plane on which a marble could follow

Incline plane

Inclined plane are ramps used to role heavy object vertically.

  • Hand cap ramp is an example of an incline plane.

an incline plane is used as a ramp. a Marble could follow the inclined surface until it reaches the half or quarter screw secitons.

Wheel and Axle

A Wheel and axel is...

  • Is a pulley a wheel and axle?

Mills use water wheels known today as turbines to produce energy. water wheels are rarely used today, however the technology of turbines have improved and are used to produce electricity.

Water Mill                           Wind Turbine

The wheel and axle shown in the picture is used to transfer energy from a high incline plane to a low incline plane.

Pulleys

Pulleys are used to move heavy loads vertically.

  • Where are pulleys used to help move things?
  • What is a pulley called when it is attached or fixed to an object?
  • Why are multiple pulleys Used and what are they called?

Pulleys in use

  • Why do we use simple and compound machines?

Examples

To lift and mover heavy objects

The pulley shown in the image allows energy to transfer from a low point to a high point. A marble would land in a cup tied to a string that loops over the pulley. On the oposite end is a wedge blocking a marble from rolling down a small incline plane.

Reuben Lucius Goldberg: An american cartoonist who would make cartoons of a complicated system to complete a simple task such as sharpen a pencil.

Modern Marvel

Which simple machine provides the greatest mechanical advantage?

Science of Technology: This.unit reviews the principles of the six simple machines. The students will create a Rube Goldberg device that transfers energy through a series of projects created by different student groups using hand & machine tools . Students must use the simple machines on their project, but they must also transfer energy to the group that follows. This activity uses design, planning, team building and cooperative engineering concepts.

The image provided show a picture of a project made by a group of two students. energy would be transfered in from the previous project and must transfer out to the project after
