The music teacher decided to teach everyone in the family the same song so they can perform it together at the festival. The teacher noticed that there seems to be a problem.. each family member plays so differently she is nervous that they will never be able to perform altogether!

The Father Largo decided that he wanted to learn how to play the piano.  Mr. Tempo is a very lazy man, he doesn't like to exercise and he sleeps all day. He was even a little sleepy when he had piano lessons!   He happens to play the piano so slow! The music teacher knew that he would not be able to keep up with the rest of his family!

The music teacher didn't know what to do!

Listen below to how Slow he plays the song. The Tempo of this song is Largo- Very Slow.  The Tempo in music tells us how Fast or Slow we play a song. Mr. Tempo ( Largo) is a lazy man and plays the piano slow!

Mrs. Tempo name is Andante. She decided to take violin lessons and prepare for the town festival.  Andante is a very relaxing women. She likes to take the baby for walks in the park, and walks the dog around town. The music teacher knew that the violin would be a nice instrument for her. After the first lesson Andante was playing at a calm, walking speed. Not too fast or slow. The teacher was very happy and is hoping that Largo could match her speed of the song.

Listen below to what a nice Tempo Andante plays the song on the Violin. The tempo marking is Andante- walking speed. The Tempo in the music tells the musician how Fast or Slow to play a song. Mrs. Tempo ( Andante) is a calm person and she plays the violin at a walking speed.

The Son's name is Allegro. Allegro is a athlete, his favorite sport is basketball and he likes to play everyday after school.  The music teacher thought that guitar would be a fun instrument for Allegro to learn and perform at the festival.

The teacher remembered that Mr. Tempo( Largo)  played the song too slow and Mrs. Tempo( Andante) played at a perfect speed. She was interested to hear how Allegro played the song.

After some lessons she listened to Allegro play...and He was playing Fast! Just as if he was playing basketball or running around the park! The music teacher was hoping he would play "Andante" like his mother. She was concerned how everyone would be able to perform the same song together!

Listen below to how Fast Allegro plays the song on guitar. The Tempo of this song is "Allegro"-a Fast speed. The Tempo in the music tells us how fast or slow musicians play a song. The Tempo's son (Allegro) plays fast!

The baby in the family wants to learn how to play the recorder. Her name is Presto! The music teacher had so much fun with the baby she was fun and excited to perform at the festival!

The music teacher was wondering how Fast or Slow the baby would play.

Listen below and hear baby Presto play her recorder very very fast! So fast that the music teacher couldn't even hear the song!

The Tempo of this song is Presto which means very fast and exciting! The Tempo in music tells the musician how fast or slow to play the song!

Baby Presto loves dancing and is always excited to see the music teacher. Every time she plays the song it is very fast or Presto! Even Faster then her brother Allegro!

Each member in the family represents a Tempo Marking in music.

Tempo is how fast or slow a musician plays an instrument.

When composers create songs they write Tempo markings in the music.

It is important for the whole family to play at one Tempo when they perform at the festival! If they don't the song will sound very silly.  The family decided to play "Andante"- walking tempo. Not to fast or slow. Just right.

Largo is Very Slow

Andante is a walking speed

Allegro is fast

Presto is Very fast

Changing the Tempo of a song can change your mood and make the song sound very different.

The music teacher explained this to the Family and they decided to practice more so they will be ready for the Festival!

The Tempo Family had a wonderful performance at the Town Festival! Family and Friends came out to support! The whole crowd cheered!

At the end of the festival they went to their music teacher and thanked her. The Tempo family is very happy that they understand how important it is to all play at the same Tempo in a band so the song sounds good!
