Getting Ready to Run

By: Miss Kalwara

Maria wants to run in the Boilermaker road race. The race takes place every year in Utica, New York during July. About 13,000 people run in the race every year. Many people come to watch the race and support the runners. The Boilermaker race is 15 kilometers long. 1 kilometer equals 0.62 miles. How far is the road race in miles?

Hint: Create and solve a proportion.

Maria must train and eat healthy in order to run in the Boilermaker. Training is just like practicing. Since the race is about 9 miles, Maria must prepare her body for running that far at one time. Maria runs 3 days a week to prepare for the road race. Some days she only runs a couple miles but other days she runs 6 or 7 miles.

Maria must eat healthy so her body feels good. When Maria eats healthy, her body will be well nourished and prepared for the long race. She also must buy  new running sneakers. Sneakers can be expensive so Maria's parents offered to pay 40% of the price. The sneakers cost 90 dollars .

Also to get ready for the race, Maria must drink a lot of water. It is recommended to drink 8 glasses of water a day. 8 glasses is the same as 8 cups. There are 8 ounces in 1 cup of water.

After months of hard work and practice, Maria was able to compete in the Boilermaker road race. Many people came to watch the race. There was a lot of music and entertainment along the course of the race. Maria had a lot of fun!

Maria finished the 9.3 miles in about 98 mintues. What was Maria's mile pace throughout the race ?
