Deer are the only animals with bones sticking out of their heads.  Some animals have horns, but horns aren't bones.  They're more like fingernails.  Deer have true bones.  Every year two new bones grow from the top of a deer's head.  At first the bones are soft and covered with skin.  Later the skin dries up.  The deer rubs off the skin.  The bones get hard.  The deer uses these horns for fighting.

                                            SECRETS

        Space keeps its secrets hidden

It does not tell.

                                                  Are black holes time machines?

                                                  Where do lost comets go?

                                                   Is Pluto moon or planet?

How many, how vast

    unknown galaxies beyond us?

                                               Do other creatures

                                               dwell        on distant spheres?

                                               Will we ever know?

Space is silent.

It seldom answers.

                                But we ask.

Testing, Testing

Paige Donahoo is scared and a bit excited as she waits for April to arrive. That's when she and all other third graders in Texas will take their first special reading and math tests. "I don't skip any school because I might miss test practice," says Paige.

Soon every third grader in the U.S. will face such tests. So will older kids. President Bush signed the No Child Left Behind Act this month. By 2005, kids in grades three through eight will be taking reading and math tests every year. Each state will decide what students need to learn to pass the tests.

Why More Tests?

Fans of the new law believe testing is the best way to see how well kids--and schools--are doing. The law also gives more money and help to schools in poorer areas.

Some people worry that teachers will spend too much time preparing kids for the tests, leaving less time for other subjects. Last year, Tessa Wooden of Venice, California, and her second-grade classmates had to practice for tests during gym!

State tests will be a fact of life for kids. All you can do is keep calm and try to do the best you can.
