Giant Pandas are wild animals, but they are so cute that people often want to hug them.

Pandas have a large round head, a heavy buildsturdy legs, and a short tail.

They are white with black ears, arms, and legs. They also have black fur around their eyes that make their eyes look big and sad.

The front paws of a panda are very strong. They also have a wrist bone that acts like a thumb to help them climb trees and grab bamboo stems.

Pandas are shorter and heavier than most people are.

Mom and Baby Panda
Mom eats bamboo while her cub plays nearby.

Pandas sleep about as much as people do, but they spend almost all of the rest of their time eating bamboo.

They eat about 40 pounds of bamboo every day!

Pandas move very slowly, but they are playful. They love to do somersaults .

When a baby panda is born it weighs only 4 ounces, about the same as a banana!

Panda cubs grow up fast. On their second birthday they are all grown up and ready to live on their own!

This map of chine shows where pandas used to roam in green and where they live now in red.

Wild giant pandas now live high up in the mountains in China.

China is proud of its pandas and it has nature reserves to save space for them to live in the wild, but there is still only room for about 1,000 pandas.

We can all make choices to protect the world we share with pandas.

Three ways to help are to reduce , reuse , and recycle .
