Bye Bye Money

Lauren's abuela was coming into town the next day so she decided she wanted to bake her her favorite cookies, chocolate chip cookies.  She went into her piggy bank to see what money she could come up with to go to the grocery store.  She was able to collect 12 dollars and 50 cents.

Lauren walked to the grocery store contemplating what everything would cost.  She looked over the list and guessed  that butter would cost approximately two dollars, sugar one dollar and fifty cents, and flour a dollar and twenty five cents.  She also figured out that although she only needed two eggs for the recipe she would have to buy a full dozen that would cost two dollars and twenty five cents. Lastly, she predicted that vanilla extract would be three dollars.

As Lauren walked around the grocery store she noticed that some of the items that she needed were not the price that she predicted.  The chocolate chips were on sale that week for a dollar and fifty cents.  The flour turned out to be double the price that she expected, making her a little nervous about the overall outcome of the purchase.  One other thing that had changed was that the butter cost 3/4 more than its estimated price.

As Lauren collected all her final items she became a little anxious about whether or not she would have enough money. When she reached the register she noticed a sign that said, "Student Discount 20% off!!."  This calmed her nerves a little and she proceeded to the checkout.  As everything rung up, butter, flour, chocolate chips, these items were what she predicted them to be. Sugar then rang up a dollar and fifty cents, eggs were two dollars and twenty five cents, and vanilla extract was three dollars.  And the Total equals.......

Total = 11.55!!

Lauren was estastic to see that made her budget.  When she finally arrived home to her surprise her abuela had already gotten there.  Although she was a little disappointed that she had not had the cookies already made, she decided that cooking them together was an even greater gift!
