Zelnor

By Brooke Long

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away there lived a mouse named Jen. She lived in a small little hill on the edge of town.

“One night I was out on my nightly midnight stroll, as I got backing view of the hill all I saw was a towering white unicorn,” explained Jen.

“Get on,” she spoke in a flowing, gentle voice that resembled a river, flowing but hit you with such force. I climbed on, unsure of my decision. As soon as I was secure she flew off through the night. I flew for what felt like hours until we arrived at the mouth of a large cave.

I dismounted and looked at my surroundings.

I was standing on a rough rock looking towards a large cave with light gleaming from inside. I looked up to the sky and only saw stars and a small white dot where the unicorn had vanished.

I slowly walked towards the cave. As I got closer I saw a huge, fiery red dragonhead protruding from the mouth of the cave.

“Come,” the voice boomed.

“Wh-who are you?” I asked. I could almost hear my heart pounding against my chest. I knew I had said the wrong thing as soon as it left my lips.

The dragon roared in fury. “How dare you! I’m the fiercest dragon, Zelnor!” screeched the fiery creature. I tried to scurry away, but felt razor sharp claws wrap around my torso.

I squirmed and screamed and heard the dragon laugh deep in his throat. I was helpless.

Then I heard the dragon roar in pain. His fingers slipped and I was not going to waste the opportunity, I slipped between his fingers. While running I looked back just in time to see the dragon fall into his golden mountains of treasure.

I also saw a long wooden arrow protruding from the dragon’s back. It was dead! I scurried off through the night. I have yet to know my savior.   As soon as I got home I saw my mother standing in the doorway with that concerned look that parents get when they are very scared for their child and have no idea where they are.

“Where were you,” she screamed. “I was so worried!”

“Where were you,” she screamed. “I was so worried!”

“I’m sorry Mom, it’s just that when I was walking home I saw a huge white unicorn that flew me off to a huge cave and then a dragon was going to eat me…” I trailed off.

“OK, just stop there,” she laughed, “It’s bed time.” I smiled and we laughed together for a long time. I was so glad to be home!
