The United States is unique amongst the nations of the world.  Some people refer to it as a “melting pot”.  A melting pot is defined as a country, locality, or situation in which blending of races, people or cultures are taking place.

The culture of the United States has been influenced by many of the different ethnic groups that make this country a melting pot.  Each February, Black History month represents a celebration of one of the many cultures that have contributed to this great nation.

One particular timeframe, from about 1920 to the early 1930s, is called the Harlem Renaissance .  During the Harlem Renaissance, there was a big increase in popular interest in art, music, and literature, created by African Americans Several individuals are considered icons of the Harlem Renaissance, and their accomplishments are revered today.

Langston Hughes and Zora Neal Hurston were two of the great writers of the period, and W.E.B. DuBois was a renowned scholar during the Harlem Renaissance.

The role of all Americans in shaping our history is important, and a greater understanding of, and respect for, the historical contributions and diversity of all Americans helps our nation to be strong.
