The state standards may also be increased because the students will be utilizing technology and reading their books to secure the knowledge that they need to learn.

How can Nook Simple Touch devices save a school district money?


It is important that school district's save money through the use of purchasing electronic textbooks instead of traditional ones. School districts are strapped for cash and the district must do everything it can to free up dollars. Through the purchase of the Nook Simple Touch devices school district's can save millions of dollars. The cost per traditional textbook per student can be in the thousands per year. Also, the traditional textbook may contain an error in a paragraph and the textbook may need to be updated. Updates can be done in electronic textbooks such as the Nook Simple Touch devices for no additional cost.

School district's encourage training for their educators to ensure that they are using technology correctly. A school district that would like to implement the Nook simple touch devices can have representatives from Barnes and Noble whom are trained in using the Nook Simple Touch devices to advise the educators on how to use the Nook correctly in the classroom. The 2nd grade teachers will need to attend a training seminar for 2 days before the beginning of school so that the Nook Simple Touch devices can be used efficiently and correctly in the classroom.

Timeline for implementing Nook Simple Touch devices into the classroom.


Throughout the course of the year, a reading project will be utilized to help evaluate if using the Nook simple touch device in a second grade classroom is successful.  There will be a four part ongoing project that the students will need to finish.  At the beginning of each of the four quarters a student will pick three books from a list of ten to read.  At the end of the quarter they will decide which their favorite is, and give a detailed book report and create a diorama using one of their favorite parts of the book.  The instructor will then evaluate if the Nook simple touch device helped engage the students with a better desire to read, and if this made the project more enjoyable than standard paper books.  Students will also need to give their feedback, and describe their feelings towards using electronic books versus paper books.

Rationale why is it important to utilize the Nook Simple Touch device in the classroom?


This addresses a couple of standards.  First, this addresses the creativity and innovation standard by allowing students to apply existing knowledge (the ability to read) to a new technology and use that new technology to gather information to create a report and models.  Additionally, this addresses the technology operations and concepts standard, helping students to understand how to use the technology in general as well as use it in a more focused way to help generate their project at the end of each quarter.

The Nook Simple Touch devices goes above and beyond representing a school district's computer literacy vision. The vision includes having students use technology to achieve high level thinking skills in literacy through the use of technology. The Nook Simple Touch devices also will ensure that the 2nd grade students appreciate and respect technology devices. The Nook Simple Touch devices will be part of the student's life for the school year and they will be responsible for their daily reading on this device. Through the use of creating a centralized website to give 2nd grade teacher's easy access to to classroom achievement the school district's goal is to maintain a centralized website for student performance to be met. The 2nd grade teachers can track and help plan the lessons that will be created from the utilization of the Nook Simple Touch devices.

School districts across the nation utilize many software programs in the classroom on a daily basis.These software programs include: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, STAR Reading, STAR Math, Timeliner, Orchard, Kinspiration, KidPix and many more diverse types of software. Therefore, the Nook Simple Touch devices will be a highly functioning piece of technology that any 2nd grade classroom can use.
