Most southerners believed that each state should have the most decision making power
Most northerners believed that the federal government should have the most decision making power.
Economy
In the south, the weather is warm all year so most people were farmers. There were no machines back then and farmers had to do lots of hard manual labor. Southerers who owned large plantations needed lots of workers. They used slaves to help with the work.
Economy
In the north, the weather was much colder so people worked in factories. They didn't need slaves and didn't think anyone should own them. Many northern states passed laws against slavery.
The population in the north was approximately 22 million people!
The population in the south was approximately 9 million people.
These sectional differences caused many southerners to want to secede . Eleven southern states left the Union and formed their own country which became known as the Confederate States of America.
