The Life Cycle of the Butterfly

Written by: Kristen Bury

Butterflies go through a life cycle known as metamorphosis .  Metamorphosis of butterflies has four stages of life: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Egg

The egg is a tiny, round object.  The female butterfly lays her eggs on carefully selected leaves.

Larva

When the butterfly larva (or caterpillar) hatches from its egg, it is very small! During this stage, caterpillars only have one job: to eat!

Pupa

Pupa

During this stage, the caterpillar creates a protective shell called a cocoon .  The caterpillar stays the cocoon while it grows to become a butterfly!

Adult butterfly

Adult

When the cocoon is hatched, the adult butterfly is free to fly in the sky!

The End!
