The Olympic Games


This is a brief description of the types of games you should expect to see in this years Olympic games in London. We will be learning how to say each of these games in Spanish so let's get started!! Vamos a ir!!



Basketball, or baloncesto, is a very popular Olympic sport. There will be plenty of action with the U.S.A. men and women being a popular choice to win the gold medal! Tip off is right around the corner.



Gymnastics, or gimnasia, is probably the most popular of Olympic sports. There are several different events such as the vault or bóveda, floor routine or piso de la rutina, uneven bars or barras asimétricas, and the rings or anillos, that athletes compete in throughout.



Track and field is another thrilling event to watch. There are several different events to watch and all of them are very exciting. Atletismo is a must see this year!



Tenis de mesa, table tennis, is a small version of real tennis, played on a table with a small plastic ball and small panels.


Swimming and diving or, natación y el buceo, is another great event. There is always excitement when people are racing head to head in the pool, or jumping from tall platforms into the water.




Volleyball, or voleibol, is played by both males and females in the Olympics. It is also played both indoors and outdoors in the sand.



Esgrima, or fencing, is a skillfull game where each athlete tries to score points by hitting their opponent with their lance. Very exciting!



Fútbol, or soccer here in America, is the world's most popular sport.  Winning gold in soccer is a big deal for the countries competing.



Weightlifting, or levantamiento de pesas, is a very competitive and entertaining sport to watch. Many people in different weight classes try to lift as much weight as possible in competition with other athletes.
