How to Determine the type of tree by its leaf.

Oaks have broad leaves and are widely spreading in their branches and leaves. A mature oak tree can drink up to 50 or more gallons of water per day. Trees take up water through their root system. Some of the water evaporates from the which is called transpiration.

To Identify the leaf of an oak tree, look for and count the lobes on the leaf

Look at the lobes and determine whether they are pointed or rounded

Look at the indentation area between the lobes and determine whether the sinuses of the leaves are deep or shallow

Look for color changes in the fall. The leaves on the Live oak and the Holly oak trees are shiny and dark green in color, typical of evergreen trees. On the other hand, many oak trees turn brilliant colors in the fall.

Look for a deep green color in the summer.

Look at the size of the leaves. The Live Oak and Holly Oak are both evergreen trees that sport small, rounded leaves without lobes or sinuses. Deciduous oaks tend to have much larger leaves overall.
