School

It was the end of summer and it was time for Susie to go back to school. "I don't want to go to school!" Susie cried. "School is not fun! All we do is read and write lots of notes! I want to go to the beach and have sleepovers with my friends!" Susie's parents were forced to explain to Susie that she had no choice but to go to school.

On the first day of school, Susie's mother came into her bedroom to wake her up for school. Susie pulled the covers over her face and once again shouted "I don't want to go to school!" In the end, Susie got dressed and got on the school bus. Susie's parents wished her a good day at school and sent her on her way. When Susie got to school, she found her class lined up in the school yard. She started talking to her classmates. "At least my classmates seem nice" Susie thought to herself. Soon enough, the teacher came and took the students to class.

When the students got to class, the teacher invited them into the room. The teacher showed the class that the desks had each student's name on them. The teacher also showed the class where to put their backpacks and lunchboxes. Susie had to admit the classroom was nicely decorated. There was posters all over the room. There was also colorful bulletin boards just waiting to be filled with student work. The classroom had something that looked like a big computer. Susie had never seen anything like it before. She wondered what it was.

The teacher called the students to the meeting area, introduced herself, and told the students that they were going to have a great year together. "Until we have to start doing work" Susie couldn't help but think to herself. The class wrote rules for their classroom and then the teacher asked if the class had any questions. Susie raised her hand frantically at the teacher. The teacher smiled and called on Susie. "Yes, Susie" the teacher said. Susie asked "What is that big computer in the middle of the room?" The teacher let out a small chuckle and explained that the big computer was a Smartboard™. She explained it was an interactive whiteboard. She showed the class that anything she loads on the computer comes up on the Smartboard™. She also showed the class that, with special pens, she could write notes on the Smartboard™. As cool as the Smartboard™ was, Susie was still skeptical if she could like school.

In the morning, the teacher spoke to the class about historical fiction. "What in the world is historical fiction?" Susie thought to herself. The teacher read a book about a girl who grew up during the American Revolution. Susie had to admit that it was intriguing to hear what it might have been like to be a girl her own age growing up during the American Revolution. Afterwards, the teacher told the students to go back to their seats. The students took out their writing notebooks and began drafting their historical fiction pieces. Susie groaned at the idea of writing.

During math, the teacher asked the students about decimals and fractions. Susie was confused. She didn't remember what fractions and decimals were. "Why is 1/2 equal to .5?" She thought to herself. "And why is .012 smaller than .2? Isn't 12 bigger than 2?" Susie's least favorite subject was math. She put her head on her desk and groaned as she tried her best to get through the math period.

When Susie got home, her parents anxiously asked her how school went. Susie replied "We have a cool new board called a Smartboard™ but I still do not understand why I have to go to school." She said as she walked up the stairs groaning. Her parents sighed, unsure of what to do about Susie's obvious dislike for school.

The next day, during writing, the teacher asked the students to write about what they would like to do when they grow up. Susie knew already what she wanted to do when she grew up. She wanted to be a veterinarian. She loved animals and wanted to help them. However, as Susie wrote her composition, she groaned again. The teacher walked over to Susie and said "Susie, I couldn't help but notice that you groan everytime we do an assignment, are you alright?" Susie respnded "I'm sorry but I don't like school. I don't see why we need it." The teacher responded "hmm...well lets take a look at what you wrote so far" The teacher read that Susie wanted to be a veterinarian. The teacher asked Susie "Susie, if you don't know how to read, how can you study animals? And if you don't know math, how will you know how much medicine to give the sick animals you treat?" The teacher walked away and let Susie think about it.

Once again, Susie returned home to her parents. Susie's parents wondered if her feelings about school had changed. As Susie walked through the door, her parents asked her how school went. Susie had to admit her feelings about school had changed. "I'm starting to see the importance of school" Susie sighed. "I need it if I want to be a veterinarian. I'm going to go start my homework" Susie sighed again and sailed off to her room. Susie's parents couldn't help but smile at each other. They were overjoyed that their daughter was motivated to do well in school.
