The Good Boatman

Adapted from the Polish Folktale,

"The Good Ferryman and the Water Nymphs"

There were once three brothers who worked as boatmen, taking passengers from one side of the river to the other.

The two older brothers were greedy, and only took passengers to the other side of the river if they were paid a lot of money.

The youngest brother was kind, and took poor passengers across the river.

One day, a poor old man asked the two older brothers for a ride, and they said, "no."  The youngest brother said that he would be happy to take the poor old man across the river.

When the youngest brother and the poor old man got to the other side of the river, the old man gave the brother an empty brown bag.  When the youngest brother returned home that night, he looked at the brown bag and it was no longer empty!  By magic, the bag was full of gold, and the youngest brother lived happily ever after.
