What are the 4 seasons?

What do you notice happens outside as the seasons change?

  • Temperatures change
  • Plants grow or die
  • The sun stays out longer or shorter
  • Different forms of precipitation fall.

The tilt of the earth

The earth is tilted on its axis, which is an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole.

As the earth revolves around the sun, it rotates on its axis, creating day and night.

Because the earth is tilted, some parts will recieve more or less direct sunlight than others. Thus, creating the seasons.

Hemispheres

The earth is divided into hemispheres. A hemisphere is on half of the earth. The Equator seperates the north and south hemispheres.

The hemisphere that is tilted towards the sun will recieve more sunlight and experience the season, summer. The hemisphere tilted away from the sun will experience the season, winter.

The direct sunlight created from the earth's tilt causes warm weather, green plants, and liquid rain.

Fall and spring are experienced when a hemisphere begins to change its tilt toward or away from the sun.

Less direct sunlight, caused by the earth's tilt, causes cold weather, dead plants, hibernated animals, and snow.
