How I Celebrate the Day of the Dead

By: Ashley Witt

¡Hola!  My name is Ana and I live in Mexico.  My family and I are getting ready to celebrate a very important holiday in the Mexican culture.  This holiday is called "Día de los muertos."

Día de los muertos is celebrated on October 31st.  It is a day when we celebrate the family members who have departed.  We do this by remembering them and baking special foods in their honor. My abuelo loved tamales so we prepare them in honor of him.

Another special food that we prepare for Día de los muertos is pan de muerto.  It is a type of sweet roll and is shaped like a bun. It is decorated with a cross to represent the departed family members.

After we eat all of the delicious food, we get to participate in a lot of activities.  My favorite activity is decorating the calaveras.  I always decorate and color one for my abuelo.  I like to use bright colors and I write his name on the head.

Another fun activity is the celebration at the cemetery.  On the way to the cemetery, many children carry yellow marigolds and join the parade.  When we arrive, we play music and dance.

If you ever get the chance to visit Mexico, I hope you are able to come when we celebrate Día de los muertos!

¡Adios!
