Goodbye, House

Written by Rachel Oldenburger

Emily’s family packed up the last of the boxes onto the moving truck. “Do we have to go?” asked Emily.

“Yes,” said Mom.

“You will love your new house,” assured Dad.

Emily walked up the stairs to her bedroom for the last time. She looked around at the bright red walls and her bare closet. She remembered the time she had her first sleepover and when she hid in the closet with her best friend Katie and told scary stories. “Goodbye, bedroom,” whispered Emily.

Emily walked down the hallway to her little brother’s room. She remembered back to the day when Mom and Dad brought him home from the hospital and he slept in the crib for the first time. “Goodbye, Michael’s room,” whispered Emily.

“Let’s go, Emily!” shouted Mom from downstairs. Emily wasn’t ready to leave. She had so many memories in her house. What if she didn’t like the new house? What if she didn’t make any friends in her new town? Emily was anxious to go, but trusted what Mom and Dad said.

As Emily walked back down the stairs, she passed the height chart on the wall. Mom and Dad had marked Michael and Emily’s heights on the wall since they were little. “I wonder how tall I will get in the new house?” asked Emily.

Emily jumped in the car where Mom and Dad and Michael were waiting. As the car drove away from the house, she turned and looked out the back window. As they drove away, the house became smaller and smaller in the distance.

A tear streamed down Emily’s cheek, but before she knew it, the car was pulling into her new driveway. She smiled as she saw children playing in the street. “Maybe I will make new friends!” thought Emily. “Now I just have to think about what color to paint my new room!”
