The Trojan Horse

By Thomas Anderle

A long time ago, there was an ancient city named Troy. The Trojans protected their city from intruders by building walls and gates. The walls were strong and high enough to stop anyone from entering. The Trojans would place archers on the top of the walls to shoot arrows down on their enemies.

The Trojans had many enemies, especially the great civilization of Greece.  Year after year, the Greeks tried to break through the walls and year after year they failed.

One day, a great Greek warrior, named Odysseus, had a brilliant idea. “Let’s pretend to give up,” he said. “We will give the Trojans a massive wooden horse as a gift to announce the end of the war. Inside the horse, we can hide an army and sneak out to attack the Trojans at night.”

The Greeks thought it was a great idea and began building the gigantic  wooden horse. Once completed, the Greeks brought the wooden horse to the gates of Troy and pretended to surrender

Overjoyed and thinking they had won the war, the Trojans dragged the wooden horse through their gates and into the city. Unknowingly, the Trojans had dragged an entire Greek army into their city!

That night, while the Trojans slept, the entire Greek army poured out of the horse to burn the city. The powerful city of Troy was no more.  Because of this story, there is an old saying that is still used today: “BEWARE OF GREEKS BEARING GIFTS!
