What are the odds of that?

Congratulations! We have just finished the section on probability, and I have created this book for you to get a little more practice before we take the test. Each page contains one or more probability story problems. Please record your answers on a separate sheet of paper and turn it into me when you are done. All answers should be recorded as a percentage AND as a fraction. Don't forget to reduce your fractions to lowest terms!

At the bottom of the page are Roland and Jake. They will provide hints for you if you get stuck on a problem. When you are ready, hit the right arrow button at the bottom to turn the page. I have also recorded the problems on every page, so just hit the play button to have the problem read to you. Good luck.

Eddie rolled a set of dice once. What are the odds that both of the dice will show the number six? What are the odds that the sum of the two numbers will be odd? What are the odds that the sum of the two numbers will eight?

I have a full deck of cards, without the Jokers, in my hand. I ask you to pull out one card. What are the odds you will pick a heart? What are the odds you will pick a card higher then 5 (Ace is high)?

Susan bought a bag containing assorted hard candies from the local corner store. All the candies are the same size and shape but they are different colors and flavors. There are five blue ones, eleven red ones, fourteen purple ones, thirteen green ones, and ten orange ones. If the bag is shaken really well to mix the candy in the bag, what is the probability that the first candy she pulls out of the bag will not be green?

Jim is monitoring the aircraft that fly over his house on their way to land at the local airport. Over the course of the week he counted 42 two-engine jets, 48 propeller driven planes, and 48 four-engine jets. Based on his data, what are the odds that the next aircraft to fly over will be a propeller driven plane?

Callahan has a bag of 19 marbles that are all the same size. 2 are green, 5 are red, 6 are blue, 3 are purple, and 3 are yellow. If he reaches in the bag and draws out a marble, what are the odds that it will be purple or green?

If the marble he draws out is purple, and he does not put it back in the bag, what are the odds that the next marble he draws out will be red or yellow?

You have finished the workbook on probability. Make sure you go back and check your answers before you turn them in. Remember, you must have a fraction and a percentage for every problem. I hope you enjoyed this little exercise, and I hope it was a good warm up for the upcoming test.
