Two Loving Volcanoes
Written and Illustrated by Kevin Hebert
A brave warrior named Popocatepetl was called to be sent off to war. But before he left, he asked the father of Iztaccihuatl, the woman he loved, for permission to marry his daughter.
While Popocatepetl was off at war, a rival came and told Iztaccihuatl that her love had been killed on the battlefield. Upon hearding this news the princess died of grief.
Returning victorious from battle, Popocatépetl was devastated by the news of his love's death. In her honor, he called for a tomb to be built for his princess as close to the sun as possible. He took ten hills and united them to create a single large mountain.
Popocatépetl then went up and laid his princess's body on the mountaintop and the mountain began to take on the shape of the sleeping woman.
After this was done, the warrior stood back and knelt before his lost love. Snow began to fall and soon covered them both as they transformed into volcanoes.
