Fungi Feud
Hi, I'm the Blue Milk Mushroom of the majestic basidiomycota empire also known as phyla as we like to call them. I'm the leader of this legendary phylum. We are by far the biggest phylum of them all thanks to me. I've been recieving new recruits for our army every single minute. It's sure an overload on my job.
Lately, my empire has been begging for some animals to decompose. Yesterday it seemed like our prayers came true, when a big deer stumbled upon our tree. It's dead and now it's time to decompose . Oh, I forgot to mention something else. Under this tree live not only my empire, but four others. When a deer this big comes upon our tree, a big war breaks out to decompose the deer first.
We are fighting with four other main phyla. They are much weaker and i think we can take them down. Our best competition is the ascomycota empire. It is located in the southern part of our tree. We are neighbors with them and we are on the South West side. The other three empires are Zygomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Deuteromycetes.
There are also other leaders of the empires/phylums surrounding us. The leader of ascomycota is the claviceps purpurea. The leader of the zygomycota is the endogone. Third, the leader of the deuteromycetes is the fungi imperfecti. Lastly, the leader of the chytridiomycota is the batrachochytrium.
As soon as we hear the load thump of the dear hitting the floor we all charge. Well kind of. Us fungi can not move. Instead we have other fungi located on the branches that shoot spores and make new fungi closer to the dear. Our strategy is to repeat this process until we can reach the dear.
All of the kingdoms share many of the same characteristics. First, all of the fungi are eukaryotic. Next, most fungi reproduce both sexually and asexually. Third, some fungi can be unicellular while others can be multicellular. Lastly, all fungi can be free-living.
The war has started. I can barely see across our kingdom because many spores are hurdling through the air at super sonic speed. Our kingdom has a huge advantage because of how immense our army is. We are leading the fight to reach the deer; yet, ascomycota is gaining on us. I am beginning to feel a bit frightened at the moment. It's my time to lead this legendary kingdom to victory.
The war seems like its in our hands until a tragedy strikes. On the fifth year of war, one of our 2 spore launchers gets nailed with an enemy spore. All I see from there is a fungi falling and a splat on the ground. This is when realize, the other kingdoms are teaming up on us. This is going to be one tough war.
One year later a miracle happens. Across the root of the tree, I notice a fungi of basidiamycota growing upon the deer. All of the sudden, more fungi start growing! The fungi start decomposing the deer by removing its organic matter that had seeped into the ground.We have won the war folks! We have won the war! When the other kingdoms finally reach the deer a year later, we had decomposed the entire thing. This miracle is now known as the miracle of the decomposing of the splendid deer.
