There are four stages in the life cycle of a butterfly. These stages are the egg, larva, pupa, and imago.

butterfly eggs

The first stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is the egg. Female butterflies attach their eggs to leaves, near food that caterpillars like to eat.

The second stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is the larva stage. In this stage, the egg turns into a caterpillar. It looks like a worm.

pupa

The third stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is the pupa stage. The pupa is also called a chrysalis. The chrysalis blends into its surroundings and often hangs off of branches or twigs.

The final stage in the life cycle of a butterfly is the imago stage. In this stage, the adult butterfly appears. In this adult stage, the butterflies mate and lay eggs, beginning the whole process again!
