Who is Trey Doherty?

Trey is a very active second grade boy who loves to be outside, play with his pets, and enjoys a game of kickball. He is seven years old and would like become a banker some day. Trey is very responsible and takes pet care seriously. He is currently walking neighborhood dogs to earn money so he can buy a pet lizard. 

Trey's legal name is Patrick Doherty III and was diagnosed with Emotional Behavioral Disorder (EBD) in the first grade. His parents are involved in his education and implement strategies from school at home. Trey's bother is in high school and has servere disabilites. His parents are busy raising two boys with special needs but strive to create the best possbile environment for Trey. 

 


Strengths

Trey is skilled in math and can solve fifth grade math problems in his head. He is proud of his math accomplishments and participates on the Mathletics team. 

Trey has also shown his responsible nature by taking care of his dog, cats, and guiena pig at home. He is dedicated to his animals and hopes to add more to the family. 



Challenges

Trey struggles to pay attention to and follow class instructions. Athough very successful in math, Trey is working on improving his reading and writing skills. He specifically needs to work on legible penmenship. He has always struggled with his fine motor skills using writing utensils, in early childhood he gripped his pencils too hard and incorrectly.

Trey does not like to take turns and is impatient. He struggles to control his emotions and acts out both verbally and physically. His overall behavior is one of Trey's biggest challenges both in and out of school. 


Characteristics of Disability

Trey's diagnosis of Emotional Behavioral Disorder can be demonstrated by his distractibility and poor concentration. Trey has tendencies to intimidate other students which accounts for his difficulties working in groups. He also struggles with agressive behavior and throws tantrums. Trey has been categorized as having impulsive, hyperactive behaviors. 



Impact on Educational Setting

Trey's disruptive behaviors tend to distract other students in his class. His hyperactivity can be overwhelmingly distracting for those around him. He struggles to interact socially with his peers because of his is impatience and either blurts out or does not wait for his turn. His behavioral outburts may affect his social skills. Trey falls behind in his school work due to poor concentration outlined by his disability.  However, he excels in math which is a subject that interests him.
