The Light in the Sky

In the beginning, there was nothing. There was a dual god, named Omaya, who was both good and bad, chaos and order, and both man and woman. Because it was both man and woman, it was able to have children. Omaya had four children: Huey, Quiza, Teza, and Totec. Each of these children represented a direction: north, south, east, and west.

The four children began to create. They even made a sea monster named Capi. There was one problem: everything the children made fell into the water where Capi would eat it. The children did not like this and attacked Capi. Capi fought back, but the children won the battle by pulling Capi in four directions until he was destroyed .

Capi's head turned into heaven, his body turned into the earth, and his tail became the underworld .

The world needed a sun in the sky. The sun was so important that it couldn't just be created, a god had to be sacrificed. Teca was chosen to be sacrificed. However, Teca was only able to become half of a sun, so the sacrifice was not complete. A fight began between Teca and Quiza, and Quiza knocked Teca out of the sky. Quiza took over for his brother as the new sun.

Humans were created. But they were very bad people, so Teca punished them by turning them into monkeys! Quiza was also mad, so she sent a hurricane to blow the monkeys out of the universe .

When the four children were first creating, they had created Tialoc, the god of rain and water. Tialoc became the next sun. Teca was still upset that he had been knocked from the sky. Teca hid Tialoc's daughter and would not tell him where she was, so he was very sad. Because of this, he shone as the sun but refused to send rain to the humans.Tialoc decided to rain fire, burning away the world.

Tialoc's sister, Cali, was chosen as the next sun. Teca and Quiza were very jealous, so they struck down Cali from the sky. As she fell, the sky opened up and water started to flood the earth. Once again, everything was destroyed.

The gods came together and deicded that they really needed to pick a strong sun that would be around for a long time. A proud god named Tecu said that he could be the sun, but the rest of the gods said that they preferred the humble Naha. The gods built a fire, but Tecu was too scared to jump in when it was his turn. Naha jumped right in. Tecu was filled with jealousy and decided to jump right in after Naha. The two suns began to rise in the east. There was too much light with the two suns, so the gods threw a rabbit at Tecu's face, causing him to shine less and become the moon.

Naha was weak and was not moving like she was supposed to. To help her, the gods gave Naha their blood to help her rush across the sky. This is how we have the sun and the moon to light up our sky during the day and the night.
