CAST UDL Book Builder v3.0 — New Features
Thanks to user feedback the CAST team has added new functionality to UDL Book Builder! We have added options for greater power and flexibility in authoring, scaffolding, sharing, and finding books. Here are the highlights.
| Authoring | |
|---|---|
New Model Books
Our expanded model book section illustrates new types of learning goals, including social and emotional development, historical inquiry, print awareness, fluency, vocabulary and more. Books also demonstrate uses for new features, new ways to name and use coaches, and more genres and age levels. Terry, the "author's coach," also offers links to technical help with media, ideas for story development, and links to related research. |
Coaches
You have much greater flexibility with the new Book Builder coaches. From a total of six animated coaches, you can select up to three, decide on their order on the page, name them, and select their voices. You also have the option of creating your own non-animated coach using a photograph of your choosing and uploading digitally recorded voice clips. |
Layouts
To make Book Bulder appropriate to a greater age range, we have added more layout options and added an optional Table of Contents layout. Choosing the TOC enables you to specify any page for automatic inclusion and linking to the TOC page. |
Audio
Now you can add up to two audio clips to each page. Ideas include oral reading of the page, sound effects, audio prompts, and more. |
Student Response Area
By enabling the student response area and inserting a prompt, you can elicit student reactions to the story and extend their thinking. Student responses are collected with the prompts and can be saved or printed (they are not saved within the book from session to session.) |
Image and Sound Information
Now you can embed the source of your images and sounds right on the page, add long descriptions for images, and include optional captions. |
| Scaffolding | |
Text Help Toolbar
Text-to-speech is available via the Text Help Toolbar on each page. Select the text you want to hear aloud and click the right facing triangle, or depress the first button on the left, then double click each sentence you want read. Use the red button to stop the reading, and the button with arrows to translate words into Spanish. Place the toolbar where you like and it will stay there. |
Show/Hide Coaches
For most support, leave the coaches on each page. To reduce scaffolding, hide the coaches and let readers work on their own. |
| Sharing | |
You can publish your book to the Public Library for the world to see, or share it with specific people. In the authoring area, click "Book Completed." Under Book Information, the buttons "Share" and "Publish" become active. Click "Share" to invite specific people to view your book. Click "Publish" to add it to the Public Library. |
| Finding | |
How do you keep track of your favorite books in the large Public Library? Book Builder offers several new supports. Using "Filter By" enables you to search for books using several different criteria.
