Terry's Tips

Vocabulary is a very important part of reading. Clarifying new words is a good way to increase children's vocabulary. It is also easier for them to understand the story when they know what the words mean. They may not know what a reptile is but they might know about turtles, snakes and crocodiles. Making the connection helps them understand the more difficult word.

Extension activity: Explore the National Geographic website reptile page with your children. Encourage them to talk about all the different reptiles on pages.
