A building with sails or vanes that turn in the wind and generate power. There is no exact date telling us when They were invented but the idea of using wind for power has been around since ancient times. A windmill can be used for a variety of things and be a source or energy that does not harm the environment and is free. Windmills can look very different and vary between location, but they all do the same thing.
